David Gilmour’s iconic “Black Strat” guitar has become the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, fetching $14.55 million at Christie’s in New York on Thursday. The legendary Fender Stratocaster, which the Pink Floyd guitarist used on some of rock music’s most celebrated recordings, shattered the previous record held by Kurt Cobain’s acoustic guitar from Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged performance, which sold for $6 million in 2020.
The sale was part of “The Jim Irsay Collection: Icons of Popular Culture” live auction, according to Christie’s. The guitar had been estimated to sell for between $2 million and $4 million before bidding began, but ultimately commanded more than three times the high estimate.
Historic Guitar Behind Pink Floyd’s Greatest Albums
Gilmour’s Black Strat played a crucial role in creating some of Pink Floyd’s most acclaimed work. The guitar was used extensively during the recording of landmark albums including “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975), “Animals” (1977), and “The Wall” (1979).
According to the auction details, Gilmour specifically played the instrument on the tracks “Money” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” Most notably, he used it to perform the legendary guitar solo on “Comfortably Numb,” widely regarded as one of the greatest solos in rock history.
Jerry Garcia’s Tiger Guitar Also Sets Record
Additionally, another historic instrument exceeded expectations at the same auction. Jerry Garcia’s custom-made guitar “Tiger” sold for $10 million, far surpassing its pre-sale estimate of $1 million to $2 million.
The guitar, crafted by luthier Doug Irwin, served as one of Garcia’s primary instruments from 1979 to 1989. He played it during the Grateful Dead’s final performance at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 9, 1995, adding to its historical significance.
The Jim Irsay Collection Returns to Market
The guitars were sold as part of Christie’s multi-week event featuring items from the Jim Irsay Collection, which runs from March 3 to March 17. The collection represents one of the greatest assemblages of music memorabilia ever compiled, meticulously gathered over decades by the late philanthropist and owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts.
However, this marks the second time the Black Strat has changed hands at auction in recent years. Irsay originally purchased the guitar at Christie’s in June 2019 for a reported $5.245 million, which set a record for guitar sales at that time.
Meanwhile, Christie’s has announced that a portion of the proceeds from these sales will be donated to philanthropic causes supported by Jim Irsay during his lifetime. The auction house has not specified the exact percentage or which organizations will benefit from the donations.
Growing Market for Rock Memorabilia
The sale reflects the increasingly robust market for historic rock music instruments and memorabilia. In contrast to traditional art markets, guitars with documented provenance and connection to iconic recordings continue to appreciate significantly in value.
The $14.55 million price tag includes all auction fees, according to information displayed on the Christie’s website. This represents nearly a threefold increase from Irsay’s original purchase price just six years earlier.
The Christie’s Jim Irsay Collection auction continues through March 17, with additional items expected to be offered. Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the Black Strat’s new owner or whether the guitar will remain in a private collection or eventually be displayed publicly.
