The man suspected of carrying out a car ramming attack on a synagogue in the greater Detroit area has been identified as someone who recently lost multiple family members in an Israeli air strike in Lebanon, according to a local Lebanese official and a Michigan mayor. The attack occurred at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where the driver was killed by security staff members after ramming the building. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the synagogue attack.
Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, a U.S. citizen originally from Mashghara, a town in Lebanon’s Beqaa Valley, was identified by Mo Baydoun, mayor of Dearborn Heights. According to the Lebanese official who spoke with NBC News, Israeli air strikes on the town last week killed two of Ghazali’s adult brothers, as well as his niece and nephew.
Family Ties to Hezbollah Revealed
The two brothers who died in the Lebanese air strike were known to be members of Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant group, according to the official. However, it remains unclear what role they played within the organization or whether they were specifically targeted in the strike. The connection between the family tragedy and the synagogue attack is currently under investigation by federal and state authorities.
Mayor Baydoun confirmed the family loss in a statement posted to Facebook overnight. “Earlier this month, he lost several members of his own family, including his niece and nephew, in an Israeli attack on their home in Lebanon,” Baydoun said. The mayor identified Ghazali as a resident of Dearborn Heights, a suburb west of Detroit with a significant Lebanese American population.
Investigation Continues as Identity Confirmation Pending
Numerous federal and state law enforcement officials indicated that while they believe Ghazali is the alleged attacker, they are awaiting forensic analysis to confirm the identity. The confirmation process has been delayed because the driver’s body sustained severe burns during the incident. Additionally, authorities have not yet established a definitive motive for the attack on Temple Israel.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following escalating violence in Lebanon. Hundreds in Lebanon have been killed and more than 750,000 people displaced in Israeli attacks, according to reports. These attacks were launched after Hezbollah struck Israel in retaliation for the war on Iran, creating a cycle of violence that has affected communities across the region.
Context of Regional Conflict
The broader conflict has had rippling effects on diaspora communities in the United States, particularly in areas with large Middle Eastern populations like metro Detroit. Meanwhile, security at synagogues across the country has remained a priority for law enforcement agencies following numerous threats and attacks in recent years. The Temple Israel attack represents another concerning incident in which international conflicts may be influencing violence domestically.
However, investigators emphasize the importance of not jumping to conclusions about motivation before completing a thorough investigation. The FBI and local authorities are examining all evidence, including any potential connections between the suspect’s family tragedy and his alleged actions. They are also reviewing digital communications and other materials that might shed light on his intentions.
Law enforcement officials have not confirmed when forensic identification will be complete or when they expect to announce a definitive motive for the synagogue attack. Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation into the incident.
