The video game industry is experiencing a historic transformation. The old rivalry between Xbox and PlayStation, which defined the market for over two decades, seems to be coming to an end with unprecedented gestures of collaboration, just as services like Xbox Game Pass prepare for a September loaded with major releases.
The End of an Era: The Console War
For generations, Microsoft and Sony fiercely competed for the exclusivity of titles and the preference of players. However, that landscape has radically changed. In early 2024, Microsoft took the first step by opening part of its catalog to PlayStation users. Last week, Sony Interactive Entertainment responded in kind, releasing the previously exclusive “Helldivers 2” on Xbox Series X|S consoles. Simultaneously, “Gears of War: Reloaded”, one of Microsoft’s flagship franchises, debuted on the PS5.
An Unprecedented Marketing Collaboration
The most striking aspect of this new stage is the cross-marketing actions between both companies. The official Xbox profile on the X social network (formerly Twitter) currently displays an image of “Helldivers 2”, while the PlayStation banner proudly highlights the “Gears of War: Reloaded” logo. These gestures, which involve two of the most important intellectual properties of each company, confirm that the strategy is no longer confrontation, but cooperation. The official “Gears of War” account itself celebrated the milestone declaring that they are “ending the console war, one enemy at a time”.
A New Strategy That Pays Off
The barriers of exclusivity are dissolving. The trend is proving to be successful, as in the case of “Forza Horizon 5”, which after its arrival on PS5 in early 2025, quickly became the best-selling game on that platform during the first semester. This openness has generated a wave of rumors about the possible arrival of other Xbox classics, such as “Halo”, “Fable”, or even “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024”, to Sony’s console.
September Kicks Off with Powerful News on Game Pass
Amidst this new scenario of collaboration, Xbox Game Pass kicks off September with two highly anticipated additions to its catalog, offering experiences for both lovers of atmospheric action and sports fans.
This September 4, subscribers will be able to enjoy the day-one release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. In this highly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed metroidvania, players will take on the role of Hornet to explore the mysterious kingdom of Pharloom, with revamped combat mechanics, new abilities, and a dark and captivating world. The title will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the cloud.
Just a day later, on September 5, EA Play members (included in Game Pass Ultimate) will have access to a ten-hour trial of EA SPORTS NHL 26 for Xbox Series X|S. This version will allow players to try out the new ice hockey season early, with its updated teams, improved animations, and new gameplay features, before its official launch.
